Herpes testing in Canada: start with the right question

Do you have symptoms, a previous diagnosis or a concern after a partner's diagnosis? Tell a healthcare professional which situation applies. The right next step depends on your history and an assessment; an online quiz or a general STI screening request cannot settle it.

Is herpes included in a routine STI screen?

Do not assume it is. The Public Health Agency of Canada does not recommend HSV screening for people without a history of anogenital lesions. Its genital herpes guide distinguishes screening from diagnostic testing. Ask the clinic which infections your planned tests cover.

If you have sores or new symptoms

Arrange a clinical assessment and describe when symptoms started. Canadian guidance identifies NAAT or viral culture as diagnostic methods; the clinician decides which specimen and test are appropriate. Avoid diagnosing yourself from photographs or waiting for a dating community to identify a rash.

Before asking for a blood test

Type-specific blood testing can be useful in selected situations, and availability varies across Canada. Ask whether it would answer your particular question, what limitations apply and how the result would affect your care. Do not buy a test simply because an overseas advertisement calls it a complete panel.

Make sure you understand the result

Ask what was tested, what the result does and does not establish, and whether any follow-up is needed. Your clinician can interpret it with your symptoms and history. This guide provides general information, not a personal diagnosis or treatment plan.
